Site Description

The wreck lies on a sandy seafloor at a depth of 97 feet (29.5 meters). Its stern section, relatively intact, rests on its starboard side to the north of the mostly flattened bow section. The prow of the bow section stands almost 15 feet (5 meters) above the seafloor. The bow itself spans approximately 117 feet (35.5 meters) and represents the central cargo hold area of the coastal freighter. Despite cross braces supporting the hull, the cargo hold is mostly flat. Over time, hard corals, gorgonians, and sponges have colonized the wreck’s surface. Divers exploring the Budweiser Bar will encounter barracuda, Spanish hogfish, various grunt species, sergeant majors, and schools of porkfish. During summer months, goliath grouper are also commonly seen .

Route

When exploring the wreck, divers should consider the prevailing currents. In strong currents, moving from one section of the wreck to another against the current can be challenging. Divers can seek shelter behind the bow section to explore the remains of the cargo hold, while the stern section also provides protection from strong currents. Under low-current conditions, divers have more flexibility and can circle both the bow and stern sections in a figure-eight pattern. Adapt your dive plan based on the current conditions for a safe and enjoyable experience!

Typical Conditions

Visibility in this site is typically very good - rarely this site has low visibility. But current are usually very strong: have 2 or.4 knots at the surface is completely normal for this site - although currents tend to be milder at depth.

Wreck History

The Budweiser Bar, an artificial reef near Boynton Beach, Florida, has an interesting history. It was created when the M/S Havel, a 169-foot (52 m) long German freighter used for hauling goods between Florida, the Bahamas, and Haiti, was intentionally sunk in 95 feet (29 m) of water on July 16, 1987. The ship was renamed Budweiser Bar (or Bud Bar) because the Budweiser Bar-Brown Distribution company provided funding for its transformation into an artificial reef. The Havel, originally built in 1968 by German shipbuilder Deutsche Industriewerke A.G., had a length of 168.9 feet, a width of 27.9 feet, and displaced 384 tons gross. After being sold to the Bahamian company Miami Caicos Shipping, Limited, it was eventually appropriated by the Palm Beach County Artificial Reef Program. Prior to scuttling, the superstructure of the Olive M. (formerly the Havel) was removed. Divers exploring the Budweiser Bar can also find the nearby wrecks of the Captain Tony and the Castor. The Captain Tony lies approximately 600 feet northwest of the Budweiser Bar, while the Castor is about 500 feet east-northeast. Additionally, scattered remains of the 70-foot salvage boat Swordfish can be found off the bow of the Budweiser Bar wreck
