Site Description

Davis Reef, located within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, lies southeast of Plantation Key. This unique dive site features a submerged, smiling Buddha statue placed there in 1989. Divers are encouraged to rub the Buddha’s head for wisdom and good luck, or its stomach for fertility. The area teems with tropical and game fish, including schooling grunts and schoolmaster snapper. Novice divers and snorkeling enthusiasts will appreciate the relatively shallow depth and abundant marine life. 🏊‍♂️🌴

Davis Reef is renowned for its vibrant coral formations, which provide essential habitat for a diverse array of marine species. The reef’s shallow waters allow sunlight to penetrate, supporting the growth of hard and soft corals. Elkhorn and staghorn corals dominate the seascape, creating a mesmerizing underwater garden. These corals serve as nurseries for juvenile fish, contributing to the overall health of the ecosystem.

As you explore Davis Reef, keep an eye out for colorful parrotfish, butterflyfish, and angelfish darting among the corals. The reef also hosts larger inhabitants, such as nurse sharks, barracudas, and sea turtles. If you’re lucky, you might encounter a majestic spotted eagle ray gliding gracefully through the crystal-clear waters.

For those interested in marine conservation, Davis Reef serves as a living laboratory. Researchers study coral resilience, water quality, and the impact of climate change on this delicate ecosystem. By supporting sustainable diving practices and respecting the reef’s fragile balance, we can ensure that future generations continue to marvel at the beauty of Davis Reef.

Outside the SPA but still considered part of this site is "Davis Ledge". Depth on this part can go down to 80 feet and it's a site suitable for the advanced diver. There are two mooring balls in this part of the site. Divers should be aware that fishing is permitted in this part of the reef and may encounter fishing boats trawling the area.

Route

This location is mostly done as a anchor dive - meaning that divers will be required to the starting point of the dive.

Some operators may choose to do the deep part of the site (called "Davis Ledge") as a drift dive.

Typical Conditions

As many of the Florida Keys reef sites, conditions tend to be very good. Although currents may be present, they are not expected to be strong. Visibility ranges from 60 to 100 feet.
