Site description

Ajax Reef is a natural coral reef located within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and Biscayne National Park. Unlike many reefs within the National Marine Sanctuary, Ajax Reef is not within a Sanctuary Preservation Area (SPA), which means it is less regulated but still benefits from the overall protection of the park. This reef is situated north of Pacific Reef and is known for its vibrant marine life and diverse coral formations. The reef’s shallow waters, ranging from 8 to 35 feet, make it an excellent spot for both snorkelers and shallow-water scuba divers. The clear waters provide good visibility, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the colorful coral structures and the variety of fish species that inhabit the area. The reef is marked by a large light tower, which serves as a navigational aid for mariners and a landmark for divers. Ajax Reef is part of the rich marine ecosystem of Biscayne National Park, which is home to over 600 species of tropical fish and numerous other marine creatures. The reef’s proximity to Miami makes it a convenient destination for both local and visiting divers. Despite its accessibility, Ajax Reef remains relatively pristine, offering a glimpse into the natural beauty of South Florida’s underwater world.
