Site description

Anglin’s Pier Reef, named after the nearby Anglin’s Fishing Pier, lies parallel to the shoreline in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Florida. This reef offers excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities, with a maximum depth of around 20 feet (6 meters). Just 200 feet (61 meters) from the beach, there’s a popular snorkeling site featuring an anchor and several cannons. Additionally, toward the southern end of the reef, you’ll find a discarded Biorock reef array made of steel cages. Despite its relatively small size, Anglin’s Pier Reef is fascinating to explore. Its complex structure, often likened to “Swiss cheese,” boasts numerous holes and channels where reef creatures thrive. Divers and snorkelers can encounter a variety of marine life, including schooling surgeonfish, goatfish, lobsters, and moray eels. Keep an eye out for nurse sharks, which occasionally visit this section of the reef

Route & typical conditions

Route

Divers and snorkelers typically begin their exploration at one end of the reef and zigzag their way seaward and shoreward. The diving conditions here are safe and straightforward, making it an excellent spot for both novice open water divers and night dives. Several buoys in the area serve as helpful orientation points. For snorkeling, head slightly seaward from the circular buoy. The Biorock lies between the two cylindrical buoys in deeper water, aligned with the pier’s end. You’ll find decent reef habitat without needing to swim beyond the pier. However, some divers venture to the second reef line, approximately 1000 feet (305 meters) from the beach. If you’re up for a longer swim, the inner reef tract is accessible from this site—just remember to use a surface-marker buoy. Additionally, there’s another reef called Palm Avenue Reef located further south, roughly the same distance from shore as Anglin’s Pier Reef.

Typical conditions

Conditions vary a lot in this site. It will depend a lot on the surface conditions. This dive is not recommended if the dive conditions are not perfect - or near to perfect. If waves are above 1 feet, divers will feel the swell while visiting the reef. Visibility ranges from 40 to 80 feet - but can be almost null if conditions are not good.
