Site description

Located approximately 0.75 miles (1.2 kilometers) north of the dive site known as Captain Mike’s, Area 51 is a drift dive that beckons divers of all experience levels. The reef system here features an intriguing ledge, ranging in height from 10 to 15 feet (3 to 5 meters), slightly taller than the one at Captain Mike’s. As you descend, the reef crests at a depth of 70 to 75 feet (21 to 23 meters) and eventually bottoms out in sandy areas at around 90 feet (27.5 meters). The fractured ledge provides ample shelter for a diverse array of reef fish, from solitary goliath groupers to schools of grey snapper. Keep your eyes peeled for Atlantic spadefish swimming above the reef, while barracuda often seek refuge below the lip of the ledge, gracefully navigating the currents. The marine life at Area 51 is a true spectacle: green moray eels, Spanish hogfish, bar jacks, creole wrasse, blue parrotfish, and French angelfish all contribute to the vibrant ecosystem. And that’s not all! Loggerhead turtles and reef sharks make regular appearances, adding excitement to your underwater adventure. While the reef itself may not be as visually striking as the marine life it supports, it still has its own charm. The top of the reef is dominated by macroalgae, as strong currents often prevent most corals and sponges from growing to substantial sizes. However, the complex habitat of the ledge hosts smaller sponges and corals, including intriguing black corals. Gorgonians and soft corals have found their niche in the sheltered areas of the ledge, creating a colorful tapestry across most surfaces.

Route & typical conditions

Route

Divers typically start their dives at the southern end of this reef stretch, allowing the current to carry them northward along the ledge. The exact starting point isn’t critical, as the ledge is easy to follow and offers plenty of interesting sights throughout its entire length. The dive concludes when divers reach either their no-decompression limit (NDL) or their air reserve.

Typical conditions

Good visibility and moderate to strong currents should be expected in this site.
