Site description

Bache Shoal is a captivating dive site located just south of Lewis Cut on the ocean side, within Biscayne National Park, Miami. This inner reef is known for its dramatic topography, where the reef rises sharply from depths of 20 feet to less than 3 feet. This unique feature makes Bache Shoal an excellent spot for both snorkelers and shallow-water scuba divers, offering a diverse underwater landscape to explore. One of the intriguing aspects of Bache Shoal is the presence of freshwater springs, which can be identified by the distortion of mixing water. These springs add an extra layer of interest to the dive, as they create unique conditions and attract a variety of marine life. The reef is home to a vibrant ecosystem, with colorful coral formations and an array of tropical fish species, making it a popular destination for underwater photography. In addition to its natural beauty, Bache Shoal is also notable for the nearby remains of the cement barrel wreck, located just to the southwest of the reef. This adds a historical element to the dive, allowing divers to explore both the natural and man-made features of the site. The clear waters and excellent visibility in this area enhance the overall diving experience, providing a stunning view of the underwater world. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or a beginner, Bache Shoal offers a unique and captivating underwater adventure. Its combination of dramatic topography, vibrant marine life, and historical intrigue makes it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the underwater wonders of Biscayne National Park.
