Site description

This is a very popular site for training in Miami Beach. The barge is not siting in 35 feet of water - used to be in 60 feet but hurricane Andrew took care of business and moved it where he wanted. The dive does not offer much other than the congregation of marine life. Penetration is not possible. This site attracts a lot of small tropical fish like parrot fish and surgeon fish - even some lobster may be hiding in the structure. Occasionally, divers may encounter a nurse shark that is patrolling the area.

Route & typical conditions

Route

Other than a couple of laps around the barge to recon the site, there is no much to advice. This dive is always conducted as an anchor dive, meaning that divers will need to return to the starting point of the dive.

Typical conditions

The water clarity around the barge can vary, but on a good day, divers can enjoy decent visibility

Wreck history

This 115-foot steel barge was originally sunk in 72 feet of water, just north of the South Seas, in August of 1991. However, Hurricane Andrew shifted its location in August 1992, moving it to approximately 40 feet of water. The barge now rests upside down on the seabed. While penetration is not advisable due to the darkness inside, there’s ample surface area to explore. Soft corals and waving gorgonians cover the top (which is actually the bottom of the hull), giving the wreck a reef-like appearance despite its rusty origins
