Site description

Breakers North, a continuous ledge parallel to the shore, stretches for approximately 2 miles (3 kilometers). Its name originates from the Breakers Hotel, situated adjacent to the reef along the coast. Divers typically explore the shallower western side of the reef ledge, which rises about 10 feet (3 meters) from the seabed at a depth of 60 feet (18 meters). The ledge is often interrupted by reef fingers extending into the sand toward the shore. Numerous species seek shelter beneath the overhangs, including lobsters, nurse sharks, moray eels, and goliath grouper. Yellowhead jawfish can also be spotted in the sand alongside the reef. The reef’s top, cresting at around 50 feet (15 meters), features a relatively flat expanse dominated by soft corals and sponges. Towards the northern end of Breakers North lies an amphitheater, sheltering soft sand and serving as a favored hiding spot for southern stingrays. Previously, a large coral-encrusted statue of Neptune stood watch over the reef here, but it has since toppled and now rests buried in the sand, leaving only the concrete pedestal behind. At the northern edge of the amphitheater, divers encounter a deeply undercut section known as “the cave.” Here, goliath grouper and large schools of grey snapper, grunts, and porkfish are common. Amidst the bustling ledge, divers must decide where to direct their gaze—whether at the sand, reef, or even the water column above, where barracuda and schools of Atlantic spadefish may appear.

Route & typical conditions

Route

Drifting with the current to the north, divers may encounter a telecommunications cable that runs perpendicular to their route, directly across the reef. This cable spans an impressive distance—from West Palm Beach to Brandie Point on Grand Bahama Island (a total of 84 miles or 135 kilometers), and then continues on to Goodman Bay in New Providence (covering another 171 miles or 276 kilometers). While the southern part of Breakers lacks the spectacular features of its northern counterpart, there’s still plenty to see. Moray eels, Bermuda chub, and schools of snapper inhabit the area. Divers often spend their time exploring the amphitheater and cave. However, it’s essential to conserve air for the journey to Turtle Mound.

Typical conditions
