Site description

Brewster Reef is a captivating dive site located just south of the Fowey Rocks Lighthouse, within the Biscayne National Park. This reef is known for its vibrant marine life and diverse coral formations, making it a popular destination for both novice and experienced divers. The reef’s depth ranges from 20 to 50 feet, providing excellent conditions for snorkeling and shallow-water scuba diving. One of the unique features of Brewster Reef is its drop-off, which creates a dramatic underwater landscape. This drop-off is often explored as a drift dive, allowing divers to be carried along by the gentle currents while taking in the stunning scenery. The reef is home to a variety of marine species, including parrotfish, angelfish, and various types of grouper and snapper. The numerous ledges and crevices in the reef structure provide hiding spots for smaller marine creatures like lobsters and eels. Brewster Reef is also part of a significant marine conservation effort. The reef is within a protected area, which helps to preserve its natural beauty and ecological integrity. Efforts to minimize human impact, such as the use of mooring buoys to prevent anchor damage, are in place to ensure the reef remains a thriving habitat for marine life. This makes Brewster Reef not only a beautiful dive site but also an important area for environmental preservation.
