Site description

The Dania Beach Erojacks site is an artificial reef composed of large concrete structures known as erojacks. Here are the key points about this fascinating underwater habitat: Erojacks Purpose: Erojacks are commonly used to protect shorelines from wave action. When placed parallel to oncoming waves, they serve as wave breakers. When placed perpendicular to the beach and the direction of oncoming waves, they prevent erosion caused by long-shore waves. Weight and Substrate: Each erojack can weigh up to 20 tons. These structures provide a solid substrate for the growth of corals and sponges. Marine Biodiversity: Erojack reefs create structural complexity, making them ideal habitats for various marine organisms. Reef fish, crustaceans, and mollusks thrive in this environment. Depth and Activities: The site is relatively shallow, with a depth of less than 25 feet (7.5 meters). It’s perfect for both diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. Explore the underwater world of Dania Beach Erojacks and enjoy the marine life! Getting there: Via Dania Beach Boulevard (Highway A1A): Drive along East Dania Beach Boulevard until you reach the coast. Cross the Dania Bridge. Take the first exit after the bridge. Access the public parking lot next to the fishing pier in Dania Beach Ocean Park. The City of Dania Beach accepts various payment methods at the parking lots, including Pay-by-Plate, Pay Online, and a Pay-by-Mobile app. Public showers are available south of the pier. Via Dr. von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park: After crossing the Dania Bridge, take the second exit. Head into Dr. von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park. The park charges a fee:$6 per vehicle $4 for a single-occupant vehicle or motorcycle $2 for pedestrians and cyclists Park your vehicle in the grassy area at the southern end of parking lot #1. Follow the trail over the footbridge to reach the beach.

Route & typical conditions

Route

The line of erojacks at Dania Beach begins approximately 300 feet (about 90 meters) from the high tide mark and extends east-west, perpendicular to the beach. These structures stretch almost 2,000 feet (600 meters) from the shore. Here’s the recommended route for beach divers and snorkelers: Start by following the line of erojacks seaward along one side. When you reach the seaward point, turn around and return to shore on the opposite side. Along the way, take advantage of the numerous stopping points to observe reef creatures. Keep an eye out for stingrays in the sandy areas on either side.

Typical conditions

Visibility can be poor, so consider visiting during the calmer summer months. Easterly currents and high tides often provide better visibility. Since the site is located in a busy boating area, always use a surface marker buoy for safety while diving or snorkeling.
