Site description

Let’s delve deeper into the fascinating story of the Guy Harvey, that Dutch-built coastal freighter with a rich history. 🌊🚢 Origins and Transformations: Built in 1957, the Guy Harvey embarked on a journey marked by multiple owners and name changes. Initially, she sailed under various identities, each chapter adding to her maritime legacy. By the late 1980s, she had assumed the moniker MV Kimberley, shuttling essential cargo between Haiti and the Lesser Antilles. Her sturdy hull bore witness to countless sea miles, weathering storms and tides. Artistry and Purpose: Enter the Pompano Fishing Rodeo—an organization with a vision. They acquired the MV Kimberley, not for her cargo-hauling prowess, but for her destiny as an artificial reef. The decision to sink her was deliberate, a nod to ecological conservation. But before her descent into the depths, a stroke of creativity transformed her fate. World-renowned artist Guy Harvey stepped in, his brush capturing the essence of the local marine ecosystem. Silhouettes of tarpon, sharks, and sailfish adorned her sides, a tribute to the underwater inhabitants she would soon welcome. The Guy Harvey became a canvas, merging art and purpose. The Submerged Realm: On May 10, 1997, the moment arrived. The Guy Harvey descended, her hull meeting the ocean floor at a depth of 145 feet (44 meters). Despite the passage of time, she maintains her dignity—bow and stern still intact, albeit with a subtle starboard tilt. The middle section, once housing cargo holds, succumbed to the relentless embrace of the sea. Life Finds a Home: Two decades submerged—a span that reshaped her existence. Marine life colonized her, transforming cold metal into vibrant habitat. Corals and sponges now cling to her hull and superstructure, a testament to resilience. Divers descend, their bubbles dancing around her silhouette. Jacks dart through the water, barracuda patrol, and Queen angelfish glide gracefully. Exploration and Secrets: For those with the courage and experience, the Guy Harvey offers more. Swim-throughs beckon, passages leading into her heart. Penetration becomes an art form—the stern section, upright and inviting, harbors hidden chambers. Here, divers tread where sunlight rarely penetrates, discovering secrets whispered by the deep. So, next time you explore the ocean’s depths, remember the Guy Harvey—a vessel reborn, an artist’s canvas, and a haven for marine life.

Route & typical conditions

Route

Choose Your Entry Point: Depending on where the operator ties up, divers may descend either on the bow or stern sections. Keep in mind that your starting point influences your entire dive experience. Bow Exploration: If you begin at the bow, take a moment to circle it. The bow holds stories of its own—a witness to countless voyages. Amid the scattered hull sections, keep an eye out for hogfish and black margates. They often seek refuge here, blending with the remnants of maritime history. Midsection Crossing: As you traverse the wreck’s midsection, imagine the cargo she once carried. The Guy Harvey’s past echoes through the rusted metal. Swim through the gaps, and perhaps catch glimpses of curious fish darting by. Stern Secrets: Arriving at the stern section, circle it like an explorer unraveling mysteries. Swim-throughs beckon—an invitation to venture deeper. Experienced divers can penetrate hidden chambers, where sunlight rarely reaches. The stern holds secrets, whispered by the sea. Ascending Gracefully: Gradually ascend to shallower depths as your dive nears its end. But before you surface, pause to admire the funnel—the last sentinel standing tall. It’s a testament to resilience, just like the marine life that now calls the Guy Harvey home. Remember, every dive is a chapter in your underwater adventure. Plan well, dive safely, and let the wreck reveal its secrets.

Typical conditions

Conditions are typically good in this site. Current are not that strong and visibility can range from 40 to 70 feet. Given it's depth, sometimes it can be a little bit dark - specially in winter times.

Wreck history

Origins and Transformations: 1957: The coastal freighter was launched at the Dutch shipyard of H.W. Bodewes in Martenshoek. 1978: It changed hands, finding new owners in Denmark. 1984: The vessel shifted to a U.K.-based company. 1985: Honduras became its next home. 1989: Anguilla took ownership. 1992: Guyana entered the picture. 1997: Back to Honduras, but this time, fatigue and neglect had caught up with the ship. Abandoned in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, she faced an uncertain fate. A Tale of Names: Voorwaarts (1957): The vessel’s birth name. Fredrika (1978): A new identity. Emma (1980): Another chapter. Vicentian (1989): The vessel’s journey continued. Emma A (1989): Yet another twist. Endezo (1992): A name echoing across the waves. Lady Kimberly (1997): Her final title before transformation. Beneath the Waves: Divesite: Named after marine artist Guy Harvey, who played a pivotal role in funding and promoting this artificial reef project. The Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo took charge, towing the crippled freighter back to Fort Lauderdale. Here, Guy Harvey’s artistic touch transformed her. Billfish and sharks adorned her wheelhouse and hull—a canvas merging art and purpose. Resting upright and intact, the Guy Harvey now hosts encrusting organisms that have long since covered over Harvey’s paintings. Yet, the passage of time and May storms have left their mark. Deterioration whispers stories of resilience and the sea’s relentless embrace. So, when you explore the depths, remember the Lady Kimberly—the vessel reborn, an artist’s legacy, and a haven for marine life.
