Site description

In the South Beach Artificial Reef Site, approximately 150 yards southeast of the Second Street lifeguard station on Miami Beach, rests a unique underwater attraction: a 22-ton concrete margarita bar. This quirky structure was intentionally sunk on May 5th, 2000, during an event playfully dubbed ‘Sinko De Mayo’ as part of the Ocean Realm Splash initiative. The margarita bar boasts an imaginative design, featuring a roof shaped like a dive flag, six bar stools, and a protective wall made of tetrahedrons (pyramid-shaped concrete forms). Its purpose? To serve as the inaugural element of the South Beach Underwater Trail—a fascinating route for divers and marine enthusiasts. Brian Flynn, the special projects manager at Miami-Dade’s Department of Environmental Resources Management, has plans to attach a mooring buoy near the bar in the first quarter of 2006. This addition will enhance accessibility and safety for divers exploring this submerged oasis. Notably, the margarita bar shares the spotlight with the Atlantis Reef Project during the inaugural Ocean Realm Conference on Underwater ART (Artificial Reefs and Tourism), scheduled for May 5th, 2006, at Nikki Beach.
