Site description

Long Reef is a notable dive site located off the coast of Eliot Key, within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. This reef is part of the extensive coral reef system that stretches along the southeastern coast of Florida, offering divers a rich and diverse underwater environment to explore. Long Reef is known for its vibrant coral formations and abundant marine life, making it a popular destination for both novice and experienced divers. The reef’s depth ranges from 15 to 35 feet, providing excellent conditions for snorkeling and shallow-water scuba diving. The clear, warm waters of the area ensure good visibility, allowing divers to fully appreciate the colorful coral structures and the variety of fish species that inhabit the reef. Common sightings include parrotfish, angelfish, and various species of grouper and snapper. The reef’s structure features numerous ledges and crevices, which serve as hiding spots for smaller marine creatures like lobsters and eels. Long Reef is also a significant site for marine conservation efforts. The reef is part of a protected area, which helps to preserve its natural beauty and ecological integrity. Efforts to minimize human impact, such as the use of mooring buoys to prevent anchor damage, are in place to ensure the reef remains a thriving habitat for marine life.
