Site description

The Mermaids Reef in Miami is part of a fascinating and innovative project known as the 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project. This initiative is a monumental public EcoArt project that combines art, marine conservation, and tourism in the form of an artificial reef installation. The project is spearheaded by the Ocean Rescue Alliance and aims to enhance marine habitats and expand fish populations while providing creative, economic, and educational opportunities for the public. The reef features sculptures of mermaids, which are cast from real people and transformed into artificial reef modules. These sculptures are strategically placed along the ocean floor off the coast of Florida, including areas near Riviera Beach, Hollywood Beach, and plans for expansion to other locations worldwide. The mermaids serve as a symbol of humans’ connection to the ocean, and the project’s mission is to bring awareness to the challenges affecting our natural reefs. In addition to the mermaid sculptures, the project includes habitat structures equipped with “coral loks,” which are devices that enable the out-planting of nursery-grown corals onto reef habitats. This process helps promote coral growth and contributes to the restoration of coral reefs, which are vital ecosystems for marine life2. The 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project not only creates an underwater destination for divers and researchers but also plays a crucial role in marine conservation efforts. The project also partners with local dive operators to offer excursions where guests can learn about reef preservation and participate in the cause. The artificial reefs provide alternative sites for divers, helping to alleviate pressure on natural reefs and allowing them time to recover. The Mermaids Reef in Miami is a testament to the power of combining art and science to create a sustainable future for our oceans.
