Site description

Newfound Harbor, located in Big Pine Key, Florida, is a captivating dive site known for its shallow waters and vibrant marine life. Situated in the Hawk Channel, this site is easily accessible and offers depths ranging from 7 to 9 feet. Divers and snorkelers alike are drawn to Newfound Harbor for its clear waters and the opportunity to explore the diverse ecosystems that thrive in this area. The site is part of a chain of islands known as the Newfound Harbor Keys, which extend west from the east end of Big Pine Key. These small islands and their adjacent patch reefs are separated by very shallow water, making it an ideal spot for family snorkeling and beginner divers. The reefs are teeming with colorful corals, sponges, and a variety of fish species, providing a picturesque underwater landscape. One of the unique aspects of diving at Newfound Harbor is the presence of shoaling areas, which divers need to navigate carefully. On entry, it’s important to give the flashing red marker a wide berth to starboard to avoid shoaling that extends about 100 yards south and west of this marker. Despite these navigational challenges, the site remains a favorite among local divers and visitors for its serene beauty and the rich marine life it supports.
