Site description

North Patch and Northeast Patch are two captivating dive sites located off the coast of Key Largo, within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. These patch reefs are known for their vibrant marine life and diverse coral formations, making them popular destinations for both novice and experienced divers. The reefs are situated in relatively shallow waters, with depths ranging from 10 to 25 feet, providing excellent conditions for snorkeling and shallow-water scuba diving. North Patch is characterized by its large brain and star coral mounds, which create a labyrinthine underwater landscape. These coral formations are surrounded by a forest of purple sea fans, adding to the site’s visual appeal. The shallow depths and clear waters ensure good visibility, allowing divers to fully appreciate the colorful coral structures and the variety of fish species that inhabit the area. Common sightings include parrotfish, angelfish, and various species of grouper and snapper. Northeast Patch, located nearby, offers a similar underwater experience with its own unique features. The reef is home to an array of marine life, including schools of tropical fish, lobsters, and eels. The site is also known for its healthy coral growth, with numerous ledges and crevices providing hiding spots for smaller marine creatures. The clear, warm waters of the area make it an ideal spot for underwater photography, capturing the vibrant colors and diverse marine life. Both North Patch and Northeast Patch are part of a significant marine conservation effort. The reefs are within a protected area, which helps to preserve their natural beauty and ecological integrity. Efforts to minimize human impact, such as the use of mooring buoys to prevent anchor damage, are in place to ensure the reefs remain thriving habitats for marine life. This commitment to conservation makes these sites not only beautiful dive destinations but also important areas for environmental preservation.
