Site description

Pacific Reef, like all barrier reefs on the edge of the deep ocean, is prone to heavy wave action. However, most of the reef lies in shallow waters ranging from 8 to 35 feet. It is well-marked by a large light tower that warns mariners of the dangerous shallows. This site is excellent for snorkelers and shallow-water scuba divers. The living coral structures here are not as intricate as those found in many protected sites inside the barrier reef. The deeper area of Pacific Reef begins at the park’s boundary, in about 60 feet of water. Here, scuba divers will discover an attractive series of ledges extending to about 90 feet before dropping off to a sandy bottom. The concessionaire offers trips to a small wall in this area, where a drift dive allows divers to be swept along by the Gulf Stream, moving effortlessly past the scenery. This dive requires experienced divers who can clear their ears and descend rapidly to the bottom to avoid being swept off the reef by the current.
