Site description

Papas Reef is a wreck site that lays in 270 feet of water off the coast of Pompano Beach. This is an advanced trimix only dive. The location is of the wreck is right on the cliff that Florida coast has - the slope is very steep from this wreck's position and towards the east. The wreck is a nice freighter that has tons of marine life like pompanos, groupers and jacks of all kind. Penetration is possible in this wreck. Given this wreck was originally though as a fishing rodeo site, there are a lot of ghost lines hanging on the wreck. Divers are encourage to bring at least one cutting device.

Route & typical conditions

Route

This dive always starts with a hot drop. Divers will be put on the water depending on the direction of the current but not less than 350 feet (either north of south) away. In this location, there is a tendency to have east push, so divers may need to check their depth and avoid getting to the bottom in 300 feet of water (swim west). The stern structure can be penetration. Divers shall make sure they have done a recon prior to attempting penetration.

Typical conditions

Visibility tends to be good but also very dark at the bottom. Currents are normally heading north and may vary from mild to medium.

Wreck history

On June 15, 1955, the coaster Henny T. (IMO number 5147724) was launched by Scheepswerf Gebr. Muller at Yard 97 in Foxhol, Netherlands. This new freighter weighed 493 tons and measured 169.2 feet in length and 27.9 feet in width. In 1975, the coaster underwent a change of ownership, becoming the Macvac A., and was reflagged in the Caribbean county of St. Vincent. However, in 1988, under the name Ebbtide, its career took an unexpected turn when the U.S. Customs Service discovered an illicit cargo of marijuana hidden on board. The vessel was subsequently sold at auction and repurposed as an artificial reef. Renamed Papa’s Wreck in honor of John Yates’ grandfather, Muncy Yates, the former Ebbtide found its final resting place on May 14, 1989. It now lies upright and intact in approximately 270 feet of water off Hillsboro Inlet during the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo.
