Site description

Pelican Shoal is a popular dive site located about 6 miles offshore from Boca Chica, near Key West. This site is known for its shallow waters, with depths typically not exceeding 16 feet, making it an ideal spot for both novice and experienced divers. The reef at Pelican Shoal is teeming with marine life, including snappers, grunts, tropical fish, butterfly fish, and even schools of Escher-inspired Tang. Divers might also encounter nurse sharks, spotted scorpionfish, and lobsters out on patrol. Historically, Pelican Shoal was an important nesting area for roseate and bridled terns. However, severe hurricanes in 2004 and 2005 decimated the tiny coral island, leaving behind a pile of rubble and causing the birds to stop nesting there. Despite this, the site remains a vibrant underwater ecosystem, offering divers a chance to explore a rich and diverse marine environment. Whether you're looking for a relaxing snorkel or an adventurous dive, Pelican Shoal provides a beautiful and accessible underwater experience. Its shallow depth and abundant marine life make it a favorite among those who love to explore the underwater world around Key West.
