Site description

There is not much left to explore in this site: only part of the steel hull that once was a freighter. The only interesting remaining part of the wreck is the crane truck that can still be recognized in the sand toward the north end of the wreck.

Route & typical conditions

Route

A couple of laps is enough to see what this site has to offer. It's a relatively small site and very flat.

Typical conditions

Conditions are often good - because it sits fairly far from the reef, conditions are not affected by murky waters moving over the reef.

Wreck history

Little is known about the history of the Pimelious. Although records show numerous spelling variations (e.g., Pimelious, Pimellis), none specifically reference a former vessel. The Pimelious sank in 135 feet of water off Miami Beach on May 11, 1971. Approximately 120 feet long, it was likely a converted barge with a flat, featureless hull. A large crane truck was parked on the stern deck. Over time, the wooden decking of the vessel has been consumed, leaving only the steel support beams in place. The crane truck now rests in the sand near the wreck, its cab long since rusted away.
