Site description

Rock Key is a captivating dive site located within the Sanctuary Preservation Area (SPA) of the Key West National Wildlife Refuge1 . Situated approximately eight miles southwest of Key West, near the Dry Rocks islands and Sand Key, Rock Key offers divers a chance to explore vibrant coral gardens and deep crevices. The site is known for its spectacular underwater formations, including deep crevices that descend 20 feet or more to a white sandy bottom. These crevices are home to a diverse array of marine life, including tropical fish, lobsters, and other sea creatures. Many of the crevices are narrow, allowing only one diver at a time to swim through, adding an element of adventure to the dive. Rock Key is ideal for divers of all skill levels due to its shallow depth and generally light currents. Mooring buoys around the site help mark the area, ensuring divers can easily locate and enjoy the underwater wonders. Whether you're a novice or an experienced diver, Rock Key offers a rewarding and visually stunning experience with its rich marine ecosystem and unique underwater features.

Route & typical conditions

Route

This site has 11 mooring balls. Similar to many other shallow sites in the lower keys, the route will depend on the ball the boat is parked at. The coral canyons run mostly from north to south. Diver should try to follow this heading back and forth moving east or west at the end of each canyon.

Typical conditions

Conditions are often really good at this site. Being shallow, visibility tends to be 100 feet+ and currents are mild.
