Site description

Shark Reef, located off the coast of Pompano Beach in South Florida, is an intriguing dive site. Here are the key details: It’s a drift dive on a reef with a depth range of 45-70 ft, suitable for Open Water Divers or those with equivalent experience. The reef runs parallel to the shoreline, and its western edge features the highest concentration of marine life. If you venture east into the spurs and grooves, you might even catch a glimpse of sharks—likely due to the proximity to “Wreck Alley.” For the best scenic route, start around the middle of the reef and drift north along the main ledge. Bug hunters can explore the small reef patch off the north end as well. If you’re interested in other dive sites, consider checking out Hammerhead Reef. It extends for over two miles from Dania Pier to near Port Everglades and is home to diverse marine life, including turtles, sharks, lobsters, and Southern stingrays. Another fascinating spot is Jacks, an accidental artificial reef formed by post-war defenses pushed into the sea. The Jacks create a nearly continuous line perpendicular to the shore, approximately 50 feet deep and about a mile offshore.
