Site description

Just offshore south of Government Cut, these leftover sewer pipes have accumulated, forming a stack submerged in approximately 55 feet of water. The open design of the pipes facilitates the flow of water and nutrients, leading to remarkable growth. Oysters, clams, sponges, and other invertebrates flourish both on the exterior and inside the pipes. Adjacent to the reef, fish gather, while moray eels and lobsters are common visitors. Inside the pipes, gorgonians cling to the sides, creating a challenging yet navigable environment for divers. Surprisingly, these concrete pipes have become a base for prolific marine life. If placed closer to the shore, they could even help prevent beach erosion.
