Site description
Trio Bravo is an old ice breaker tug boat that sits in 145 feet of water in front of the coast of Fort Lauderdale Beach.
Operators don't regularly schedule trips to this wreck, but it's definitely worth the visit.
The Trio Bravo currently rests upright and mostly intact on the seafloor. Its superstructure bears the scars of the explosions that caused its sinking. Divers will find a convenient opening to explore the vessel’s interior. Descending into the engine room, they can observe the massive boilers nestled within its hull, along with adjacent compartments.
Penetration is possible on this wreck, but there is no too many things to explore in the inside.
Route & typical conditions
Route
This dive usually starts with a hot drop and ends with a drift to allow divers to complete their decompression obligations.
Divers shall swim a lap around the wreck to explore the outside. For those that qualified, a visit to the engine room is worth it.
Given it's relatively shallow depth for a technical dive, decompression should not be that long and divers may get an extended bottom time.
Typical conditions
Conditions are usually good in this site. Currents at depth tend to diminish if any at surface and visibility ranges from 30 to 50 feet.
Wreck history
The Trio Bravo, originally launched in 1898 by the Columbia Iron Works and Drydock Company in Baltimore, Maryland, served as a tugboat for the Consolidated Coal Company. In 1950, it was sold to The Roen Steamship Company and operated on the Great Lakes. Later, in 1980, the vessel changed hands again, becoming part of the Trio Shipping Company of Honduras.
On January 21, 1981, the Trio Bravo sank at its dock in Port Everglades and remained submerged until March 14. Subsequently, in August 1981, it was auctioned and prepared for disposal as an artificial reef. Finally, on December 16, 1983, the ship was intentionally sunk off Fort Lauderdale.
Here are the name changes over the years:
