Site description

Turtle Rocks and Turtle Reef are captivating dive sites located at the northern end of the Key Largo Marine Sanctuary, within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. These sites are known for their shallow depths, ranging from 7 to 12 feet, making them ideal for both snorkelers and shallow-water scuba divers. The sandy-rocky bottom ensures good visibility, allowing divers to fully appreciate the vibrant marine life and diverse coral formations that inhabit the area. Turtle Rocks, also known as Turtle Reef, is named for the green, hawksbill, and loggerhead turtles frequently spotted in the area. The reef features a series of spur and groove coral formations with sand channels running parallel to the main reef. These formations create a dynamic underwater landscape, providing numerous hiding spots for smaller marine creatures like lobsters and eels. The site is also home to the remains of two beacons, adding a historical element to the dive. The clear, warm waters of Turtle Rocks and Turtle Reef make them popular destinations for underwater photography. Divers and snorkelers can expect to see a variety of tropical fish, including parrotfish, angelfish, and butterflyfish, as well as colorful coral species such as brain coral and sea fans. The presence of seagrass meadows further enhances the biodiversity of the area, supporting a wide range of marine life. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or a beginner, Turtle Rocks and Turtle Reef offer a unique and captivating underwater experience. Their combination of vibrant marine life, stunning coral formations, and historical intrigue makes them must-visit destinations in the Florida Keys.
