Site description

The USS Curb is a fascinating dive site located about one mile south of the Cayman Salvager artificial reef near Key West. This 213-foot naval salvaging tugboat was converted into an artificial reef in November 1983. Resting upright at a depth of 185 feet, the USS Curb offers an exciting challenge for advanced divers. The ship features many nooks and crannies to explore, but divers should be cautious as the fine silt inside can reduce visibility once disturbed. Originally constructed in California and launched in 1943, the USS Curb participated in several war-related activities during World War II. After being decommissioned in 1946, it was eventually sunk to create the artificial reef that it is today. Divers can penetrate the interior of the ship, but it is recommended to do so with an experienced guide due to the potential for reduced visibility. The USS Curb is not marked, so divers will need to use GPS coordinates to locate it. This dive site is perfect for those looking to explore a less-visited location with a rich history and unique underwater features.
