Site description

Vista Park Reef is a hidden gem, mostly known to locals. It’s located about 1,000 feet from the shore, accessible from Vista Park Beach in Fort Lauderdale. This reef lies approximately 600 feet off the shore and is situated in about 15 feet of water, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling. Local scuba divers and scuba classes also frequent this area. The reef boasts vibrant coral formations, including both hard and soft corals. As you explore, you’ll encounter lobsters, turtles, and a variety of marine life. Vista Park Reef is a great place for underwater photography, so don’t forget your waterproof camera! Access to the reef is available from two different parks: Loggerhead Park and Vista Park. Loggerhead Park is preferred by some due to convenient picnic tables for gear setup. Both parks have around 10 parking spots and are just a block away from each other. After walking off the beach, swim approximately 600 feet to reach the reef. Descend to explore the coral reef below the surface. Remember to use a dive flag for safety (required for all beach dives in South Florida). The reef runs parallel to the shore, extending north and south. It’s a few hundred feet wide from east to west. Feel free to explore different sections or stay near the edge and head north or south. If you’re a strong swimmer, consider heading to the slightly deeper middle reef for an extended adventure. Whether you’re snorkeling, diving, or simply enjoying the marine life, Vista Park Reef offers a memorable underwater experience!

Route & typical conditions

Route

This expansive patch reef stretches for approximately 800 yards. To reach this reef, swim straight out from the beach access point at Vista Park. After covering about 70-100 yards, you’ll find yourself at the middle point of the reef. The coral formations here are diverse and vibrant, attracting marine life such as lobsters and turtles. Vista Park’s entrance serves as a convenient starting point for your reef adventure. From there, head seaward to explore the underwater wonderland.

Typical conditions

Underwater conditions are highly dependent on surface: if choppy up in the surface may be bad underwater. Visibility on a calm day ranges from 60 to 80 feet. Condition are better while high tide.
