Site description

A small and beautiful wreck that received heavy damage throughout the years. Although the dive here can be refreshing, this site is unlikely to be done alone. Marina life tends to be abundant as it sits in relatively shallow waters and given the location of the wreck, marine life moves around the nearby wrecks. Penetration is not possible in this site.

Route & typical conditions

Route

As a stand alone dive, divers should give it a couple of laps to see what it has to offer. Usually, this site is part of the Key Biscayne Wreck Trek, sitting in the very south of the trek. Near by divers may explore the Belzona 2, Belzona 3 and Belcher barge - all at swimming distances.

Typical conditions

Conditions vary in this site, visibility can be as good as 70 feet but regularly is around 40 to 50 feet. Currents are not strong in this area.

Wreck history

Belzona 1 historic photo
The 85-foot-long tug Belzona One was intentionally sunk as an artificial reef in 70 feet of water on May 30, 1990. Originally named Mitza, it had various other names during its career, including Iames G, Alco Caribe, and Holley. After sustaining significant damage from a fire, the tug was acquired by Belzona America, Incorporated, which generously donated it to Miami-Dade County for use as an artificial reef. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew removed its upper deck, which now rests in the sand alongside the hull. You’ll find the Belzona One off Key Biscayne, near two other tugs—Belzona Two and Belzona Three—as well as the Belcher Barge.
