Site description

The Brandywine is the third wreck in the "Custom's reef" - the cemetery for vessels that attempted to smuggle drugs into the US. She lies in around 140 feet of water only 150 feet from another convict: Miguana. A typical costal freighter that has opened cargo holds and access to the bridge. Probably the highlight of this wreck is the easy access to the engine room - almost a swim through

Route & typical conditions

Route

Depending on where the dive starts (Etoile, Miguana or here) the recommended route would be to explore the site where the dive begins for then moving to the next wreck, The three wrecks are very similar among them and will offer similar experiences. The challenge for the dive is to pressure test the navigational skills for divers, under pressure and with not. lot of time to resolve, Regardless of what the plan is, divers shall get to the dive day wit a well studied mapm bearing, headings and distances, and of course, a working compass. Th fan part of this dive is to check on the three wreck and still be able to return back to te boat - even four or five boats if divers want to add the Lakeland and Tacomma(

Typical conditions

Not a lot of light get down to the bottom, making the dive start with additional stress. Currents will also play they part in this deal and making navigation more complex, Divers shall prepare themselves before the dive and should make sure that there us a team plan and not one plan per each individual part fo the team;

Wreck history

The Brandy Wine, launched in 1949, was one of four vessels seized by the U.S. Customs Service for their involvement in drug smuggling via the Miami River. Along with the Miguana, Etoile De Mer, and the Tacoma, the Brandy Wine was sunk as an artificial reef off Key Biscayne known as the U.S. Customs Reef. On February 12, 2001, Customs inspectors discovered a hidden compartment under a waste oil tank in the Brandy Wine’s forward cargo hold. Following the detonation of scuttling charges on July 13, 2001, the Brandy Wine now rests upright and intact in 145 feet of water. Divers exploring the area will also encounter the 101-foot long Miguana
