Site description

Named after its distinctive shape, Crab Cove Reef runs parallel to the shoreline, forming a segment of the outer reef. When viewed from above, this underwater wonder takes on the appearance of a crab. The northern and southern ends gracefully curl, resembling the claws of our The heart of Crab Cove Reef lies in its western-facing ledge—the main attraction for divers. Here, sea life thrives in abundance. Coral colonies cling to the rugged substrate, creating a vibrant tapestry of colors. Schools of fish dart among the nooks and crannies, their silvery scales catching the sunlight. But that’s not all—this ledge is a hotspot for lobsters, thanks to its undercut formations. As you explore the western ledge, prepare to be mesmerized. Parrotfish nibble on coral, their beaks chipping away at the calcium structures. Butterflyfish flit by, their vibrant patterns reminiscent of delicate brushstrokes. And keep your eyes peeled—whale sharks have been spotted here, although their appearances are rare and fleeting. Lobster enthusiasts rejoice! Crab Cove Reef is a favorite haunt for lobstering. The undercut ledges provide ideal hiding spots for these delicious crustaceans. Slip into the crystal-clear waters, armed with your lobster tickle stick, and discover the bounty that awaits beneath the waves.

Route & typical conditions

Route

Drift dives are the norm for this site. Operators may put divers in the water at either the south or north end depending on the current and let them drift to be picked up after they surface. Interestingly enough, the north end of this site sees a "sand desert" where the wrecks of the United Caribbean and Sea Emperor (aka Aqua Zoo) are located. If currents are strong and heading north and with the consent of the dive operator, divers may visit a reef and a wreck trek in one dive.

Typical conditions

Similar conditions to most of the 3rd line reefs shall be expected: currents can be strong (typically north) and visibility can be as good as 100 feet, but average 50 ft.
