Site description

Crocker Reef, known for its rich marine life and captivating underwater topography, is a coral reef located within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. It lies to the southeast of Plantation Key and is in the vicinity of Davis Reef, offering a diverse diving experience. The reef’s structure includes a near wall that drops from 45 to 95 feet, providing an intriguing environment for advanced divers. The area is adorned with large sponges and gorgonians, and it’s not uncommon for divers to encounter sea turtles or even sharks in this dynamic ecosystem. Crocker Reef’s distinct feature is that it is not within a Sanctuary Preservation Area (SPA), unlike many other reefs in the sanctuary. This means that while it is protected, it does not have the same level of restrictions as SPAs, allowing for a different kind of interaction with the marine environment. The reef’s location and the absence of SPA status make it a unique spot for both ecological study and recreational diving, contributing to the overall allure of the Florida Keys as a premier destination for underwater exploration and adventure.
