Freighter

Site description
This freighter sits upright within recreational depth limits. It is intact and full of life.
As most other wrecks in the area, its bow is pointing south to fight the currents typical currents that often head north.
This site poses a great challenge por advance and technical divers. It offers great penetration opportunities both in the stern superstructure and in the small bow crew quarts. The engine room itself is wide open with marine life often so dense that it makes visibility hard.
This is definitely a hidden gem in the Fort Lauderdale coast that unfortunately not so many operators serve.
Route & typical conditions
Route
Operators will usually set a temporary line to the stern superstructure - where the wreck rises to 70 feet from the sand bottom. From there, divers may want to do a quick lap on the wreck - and probably visit the cargo holds which are all connected through openings. Visibility tends to be diminished in the cargo holds.
Divers may want to visit the spectacular stern superstructure and enjoy the view of the engineroom.
Typical conditions
Currents can be strong in this area - divers may see ripping currents even at depth. Visibility is often good, ranging from 40 to 70 feet.
Wreck history
The freighter was launched in 1974 in the Netherlands. It was later seized on January 31, 2001, by the U.S. Customs Service. They followed a rental truck that had been loaded with 880 pounds of cocaine from the freighter. Over the years, the ship underwent several name changes: originally named “Ameland” in 1974, it was later renamed to “Afhanelijk” in 1988 and finally to “Dantor” in 1998.
As a divesite, the freighter now rests upright and intact in 128 feet of water. While charters rarely visit it, the wreck is said to have abundant marine life, including lionfish.
