Site description

The Peter B. McAllister is a well-known dive site located off the coast of Fort Lauderdale1 . Originally a harbor tugboat from New York City, the Peter B. McAllister was part of the McAllister Towing Company fleet. Built like a tank, this sturdy vessel was scuttled as part of Broward County's artificial reef program in June 1998. The wreck now lies upright with a slight list to starboard, bow pointing south, at a depth of 60 to 70 feet. Divers at the Peter B. McAllister wreck can explore the entire length of the 85-foot tugboat on a single dive. The wreck is beautifully intact and teeming with marine life, including a variety of fish, making it an exciting spot for underwater exploration. The wreck's proximity to other dive sites, such as the Bruce Mueller, adds to its appeal, providing divers with multiple points of interest in the area. Whether you're an experienced diver or a beginner, the Peter B. McAllister offers a rewarding and visually stunning underwater adventure. The site's rich marine ecosystem and historical significance make it a favorite among divers in the Fort Lauderdale area.

Wreck history

Peter B. McAllister historic photo
The tug Peter B. McAllister, official number 239970, was built in 1940 by Equitable Equipment Company as hull number 108 in Madisonville, Louisiana. The 75.9-foot-long, 23-foot-wide, 138-gross-ton tugboat underwent several name changes, initially known as B.T. De Bardeleben, then Lilian, and finally Peter B. McAllister. On August 29, 1973, while attempting to haul off the grounded Delaware Getty in San Juan Harbor, Puerto Rico, the Peter B. McAllister capsized and sank. However, it was subsequently raised, repaired, and returned to service. Eventually, the tug was deliberately sunk as an artificial reef on May 16, 1998, off the coast of Broward County. The wreck now rests upright, with its bow pointing south, in 70 feet of water.
