Site description
Back in the 1950s, the Army Corps of Engineers dug a trench through the reef in Broward County. The purpose was to bury an outfall pipe that carries treated water, discharging it offshore at a depth of 100 feet. These unique ledges run east and west. Inside the trench, sandbags create a dam to prevent the pipe from rising during storms. Additionally, there are artificial structures near the dam. The reef within the trench is broken but beautiful, with cliffs providing cover for marine life. You’ll find coral, basket sponges, whips, and fans. Outside the ledge, there are good lobster crevices when the bugs are deep. Occasionally, large grouper can be spotted along the outer edges.
Route & typical conditions
Route
For the best scenic route, start either from the north or south of the trench (depending on the current), then drift into the trench and head east or west. This path is a favorite, especially during lobster season. 🌊🦞
Typical conditions
Conditions in this site are a lottery: you never know what you are going to get. Although visibility is generally good, this is not always the case. Site's proximity to the Hillsboro inlet impacts its conditions.
