Site description

The "Shasha" is the southern most wreck in the famous "Governors Riverwalk" wreck trek. This 185 ft coastal freighter suffer the same faith as his neighbors and was seized by US Customs because of drug smuggling. She now rests on the sea bottom inviting divers to come visit her. The whole corridor is full of marine life: if you want to see shark in the natural environment, probably this is one of the very best sites in the area. Bull sharks, lemon sharks and reef sharks all live in harmony in this area. Even the shy hammerhead may call present in the early summer and late fall. This dive almost obligues divers to bring a camera. Penetration is not possible in this wreck given it received a lot of damage after many storms playing with his position.

Route & typical conditions

Route

Given currents, operators may conduct this dive as a drift. For non technical divers, this dive may last no more than 30 minutes given its depth. Once moving north to the next wreck (the Thozina) divers will find it difficult to return back to the Shasha (currents tend to be strong). Still there are some "pockets" of shelter for divers to catch their breath if tired,

Typical conditions

Visibility tends to be ok in this site (40 to 60 feet). Proximity to the Lake Worth inlet may degrade visibility if low tide is present. Currents are typically moderate to strong.

Wreck history

Shasha Boekanier historic photo
The Sha Sha Boekanier began its journey as the Richard Rahmann, built in 1962 at the Neuenfelde shipyard in Germany. Over the years, it changed hands and names several times, eventually becoming the Sha Sha Boekanier. In 2001, during an anti-narcotics operation, US Customs Service agents discovered around 100 pounds of cocaine hidden in the engine room of the vessel, leading to its seizure and forfeiture. On February 17, 2002, the Sha Sha Boekanier was intentionally sunk off Palm Beach at the Governor’s River Walk Reef. This reef, known for its clear water and abundant marine life, offers an exciting dive experience. Experienced divers can navigate the currents and explore the area between the Sha Sha Boekanier and the nearby wreck of the Gilbert Sea .
