Site description

The Skycliffe stands upright and remains largely intact. Its massive stern superstructure extends nearly 70 feet from the seabed. The wreck teems with life—soft corals and sea fans adorn its surface, while large schools of fish swim around the exterior. Midship and near the bow, small deck houses offer divers a bit of shelter as they navigate against strong currents. When the water isn’t rushing over the wreck, abundant marine life, including snapper, jacks, mahi mahi, and grouper, congregates around the structure. Caution: Lionfish are prevalent throughout the ship.

Route

A cavernous engine room lies aft of the stern superstructure, with a large deck access hatch providing entry to the interior. Access to the engine room is also possible through the aft hold or the space left by the removed funnel. Additionally, the mechanic’s workshop can be found off the hold on the lower deck. The bridge is also easily reachable. Caution: The Skycliffe is ensnared in copious amounts of monofilament fishing line.

Typical conditions

The wreck lies generally in alignment with the strong Gulf Stream Current. However, thanks to the substantial structural relief provided by the vessel, divers can comfortably explore it.

Wreck history

The Skycliffe, originally constructed in 1961 as the Erimo Mara at the Osaka, Japan shipyard by Namura Shipbuilding Company, Limited, underwent several name changes. In 1977, it was sold and renamed Sea Venture, and later, in 1983, it sailed under the name Skycliffe. Eventually, in 1991, the freighter was repurposed as an artificial reef due to issues encountered while docked in New Orleans. It was towed to Fort Lauderdale, cleaned. On November 2, 1991 it was sunk off Boynton Beach.

Great wreck. The access to the engine room is a must see! Tons of marine life. And too many Lionfish - maybe a good spot for next Lionfish derby 😎
