This reef is part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and is designated as a Sanctuary Preservation Area, ensuring the protection of its diverse and vibrant ecosystem. The reef’s shallow waters and rich marine life make it an ideal spot for underwater exploration. The reef is renowned for its distinctive spur-and-groove formations, where large coral ridges are interspersed with narrow sandy channels. This unique structure creates a thriving habitat for a wide array of marine species, including an array of colorful corals, tropical fish, sea turtles, and occasionally, playful dolphins. Whether you’re an avid diver, a casual snorkeler, or simply someone who appreciates the wonders of the ocean, Sombrero Reef offers an unforgettable experience. Its combination of natural beauty, historical significance, and accessibility makes it a standout destination in the Florida Keys.
