Site description

Alligator Reef, situated off Matecumbe Key in Islamorada, Florida, is a dive site that captivates with its rich marine life and intriguing history. The site is marked by a 136-foot lighthouse in shallow waters, guiding divers to a world beneath where the depths vary from 20 to over 95 feet in areas known as “The Deep.” It’s a diver’s haven, from novices to the more experienced, offering clear visibility to witness an underwater festival of colors. Home to over 550 species, the reef is a bustling metropolis for creatures like sea fans, corals, and a variety of fish, all thriving in harmony. While the USS Alligator was once believed to have met its end here, the wrecks that divers find today are from other unidentified vessels, adding a layer of mystery to every dive. Not just for divers, the reef is also a snorkeler’s paradise, particularly around the lighthouse where fish congregate in astonishing numbers, making it an ideal spot for underwater photography. Alligator Reef thus stands as a testament to natural splendor and historical enigmas, promising divers an adventure that’s both visually stunning and richly layered with stories of the past.
