Site description

Aptly named for its abundant Queen Conchs, Conch Reef boasts one of the best-developed coral reefs and walls in the Florida Keys. Here’s what makes it special: Aquarius Underwater Habitat: Imagine a research outpost submerged beneath the ocean’s surface. That’s Aquarius! Scientists spend 10-day stints here, studying and exploring the surrounding marine environment. It’s like a cosmic lab beneath the sea. Mission 31: In 2013, Fabian Cousteau (yes, Jacques Cousteau’s grandson) embarked on Mission 31. For 31 grueling days, he and his crew lived underwater at Aquarius. Their mission? To understand the effects of prolonged underwater living and study the coral and marine life. The Lab: Aquarius sits at around 60 feet deep, but the living unit hovers at about 50 feet. This 81-ton facility measures 43’ x 20’ x 16.5’. Inside, you’ll find 6 bunks, a shower, toilet, instant hot water, microwave, trash compactor, and even a refrigerator. Plus, air conditioning and computers that link back to shore—talk about high-tech ocean living! Diving Delights: Conch Reef’s horseshoe shape offers shallower portions (around 15-20 feet) perfect for snorkeling. But the real star? The wall! It plunges deeper, revealing a complex tapestry of marine life. Beware, though: strong currents make it challenging for novices. Skilled divers, however, revel in drift diving along this well-formed coral reef structure. So whether you’re a curious snorkeler or a seasoned diver, Conch Reef beckons—a realm where science, adventure, and underwater beauty converge.

Route & typical conditions

Route

The route depends on the actual site. The wall is always conducted as a drift dive: operators will put divers in the water in the south end and pick them up in the north end of the wall (before the reaching the lab). For the shallower parts of the reefs, operators may use the mooring balls and request divers to come back to the initial point of the dive.

Typical conditions

Currents are typically strong in the wall and milder in the shallow reefs. Visibility in the wall can be affected if colder waters from the deep are incoming.
