Site description

The Sand Island Reef, once an above-water mound with a solitary coconut tree, was swept away by the powerful Hurricane Donna in 1960. Now, it remains as a shallow hump of sand submerged 11 feet below the water’s surface. Nearby, an impressive patch of coral reef thrives, particularly after Hurricane Irma. This patch boasts the largest and healthiest Elkhorn Corals. The site also attracts abundant schools of Surgeonfish, Wrasse, and grunts.

Route

This dive requires divers to come back to the buoy where the bock is moored. The site is not very large in extension and allows divers to get a good view in one dive.

Typical conditions

Visibility is typically good - as most of the shallow sites in Key Largo. If surface conditions are rough, divers may feel the surge underwater.
