Site description

Boca Artificial, like many South Florida reefs, lies as a section of the outer reef, running parallel to the shoreline. The highest concentration of sea life and coral cover graces the western-facing ledge, commonly referred to as the main ledge. As you venture inside the undercut ledge, you’ll find the reef rising to a height of 10 feet or more. The top edge of this underwater structure is jagged and teeming with soft corals, sponges, algae, and various other invertebrates. But that’s not all! Boca Artificial also features a small artificial reef composed of 20 Erojacks. These Erojacks were initially stacked about 6 feet high within a sandy depression. However, Hurricane David had other plans—five of these Erojacks were knocked off the pile and ended up about 5 feet away in a sand hole. Subsequent storms continued to dislodge more Erojacks from their original arrangement. As you explore this vibrant underwater world, keep an eye out for the diverse marine life that calls Boca Artificial home. You’ll encounter angelfish, Bermuda chub, barracuda, lobsters, and a multitude of other fish species.

Route & typical conditions

Route

When exploring Boca Artificial, you have two options to begin your underwater adventure: either start from the north hook or the south hook, depending on the current. As you drift along the main ledge, you’ll be treated to a picturesque route with stunning views. Now, if you’re specifically interested in lobstering, consider venturing to the deeper side of the reef (the east side). There, you’ll find the intriguing Spur & Groove formations. Alternatively, explore the false ledge on the western side.

Typical conditions

Good conditions are the norm in this site. Current can be strong - which helps with the drift dive. Visibility is usually in the mid fifties.
