Site description

Morey Bend, like many South Florida reefs, forms a section of the outer reef, running parallel to the shoreline. The western-facing ledge, affectionately known as the main ledge, boasts the highest concentration of sea life and coral cover. Dive operators often favor Morey Bend on rough days due to its proximity to Boca Inlet. Interestingly, the north-south ledge here reaches impressive heights in certain places—up to 20 feet! The reef earned its name from one of the local resident moray eels, adding a touch of character to this underwater wonderland. Keep your eyes peeled, as Goliath Groupers have also been spotted in these waters. For navigation, you have two options: start from either the north or south hook (depending on the current) and drift along the main ledge. This scenic route offers breathtaking views. And if you’re lobstering, consider exploring the deeper side of the reef (eastward) toward the Spur & Groove formations or the false ledge on the western side.

Route & typical conditions

Route

This is often conducted as a drift dive. Depending on currents divers may start the dive in the north end (if south currents) or south end (if north currents). Stay close to the ledge to maximize the dive experience.

Typical conditions

Currents can be strong in this site - given the proximity to the Gulf Stream. Visibility tends to be good - although it can be affected in low tide given this site's proximity to the Boca Raton inlet.
