Site description

The twin masts, rising to a height of 68 feet above the wheelhouse, provide an excellent opportunity for photographers to capture silhouette shots. Bait balls often gather around the masts, attracting jacks and other predators. During a past hurricane, the forward mast was laid over to starboard and now rests in the sand. This wreck enjoys immense popularity! Its depth and location allow divers frequent encounters with marine creatures such as Goliath Groupers, Barracuda, and large schools of smaller fish. Keep a watchful eye beyond the wreck in the water—you might spot the occasional shark or other pelagic fish passing by. The surface of the wreck is adorned with soft coral and sponges.

Route & typical conditions

Route

Since its scuttling, the Rodeo 25 has endured the effects of multiple storms. The wreck tilts significantly to starboard, with the bow resting on its side. The hull forward of the stern superstructure has also collapsed. The highest point of the wreck lies approximately 65 feet below the surface. While there are opportunities to peer inside the “Rodeo,” extensive penetration is limited. However, several areas allow for swimming through, and under, some of the wreckage.

Typical conditions

Dive conditions at this site can vary significantly. Sometimes there is no or very light current, while other times the current can be quite strong. Visibility typically ranges from 50 to 100 feet. Water temperatures around the wreck fluctuate based on the season and currents, spanning from 72 to 87 degrees Fahrenheit.

Wreck history

Rodeo 25 historic photo
After its launch, the Rodeo 25 changed hands multiple times. Originally constructed by Scheepsbouw Unie N.V. in Groningen, Netherlands, the Dutch freighter set sail on June 19, 1956, under the name ‘Nore.’ In 1969, it was sold to William Coe and Company, Limited of Bridgetown, England, and renamed ‘Booker Trojan.’ Subsequent sales led to new names: ‘Capricorn’ under St. Godric’s Shipping Company, Limited of Limassol, Cyprus (1976), and ‘Carigulf Venture’ under Carigulf Lines of Panama (1976). Finally, in 1986, it became the ‘Windward Trader’ under Windward Shipping Corporation of Honduras. Facing financial difficulties, the freighter found a new purpose when it was acquired by the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo. In honor of the Rodeo’s 25th anniversary, it was renamed ‘Rodeo 25.’ The vessel was prepared for sinking, loaded with drums of ether seized during drug lab raids, and eventually the Broward County, Florida bomb squad detonated the drums and sent it the seafloor while thousands of spectators looked on.
